What kinds of files can I lock?
Any file: PDFs, Word documents, Excel sheets, PowerPoint decks, images, videos, ZIP archives and more. Each file is encrypted with your password and saved as a .locked file that only opens with that password.
Are my files uploaded to your server?
No. Locking and unlocking happen entirely in your browser, so your files and password never leave your device.
What happens if I forget the password?
The file cannot be recovered. There is no reset link or back door, and nobody, including us, can unlock it without the password. Save the password somewhere safe, such as a password manager, before you share or delete the original.
How does someone open a .locked file?
They open this page, switch to Unlock, add the .locked file and type the password. The original file comes back with its original name and type.
What does "Keep PDFs as PDFs" do?
PDFs get a standard PDF password instead of becoming .locked files, so they still open in Adobe Acrobat, Chrome, Edge, macOS Preview and any other PDF reader, which asks for the password. You can also turn off printing, copying or editing for people who open the PDF.
How secure is the encryption?
.locked files use AES-256-GCM with a key derived from your password using PBKDF2-SHA256 (600,000 rounds), and any change to the file is detected. Protected PDFs use AES-256, the strongest encryption in the PDF standard. In both cases the real protection is your password: use a long one, or let the tool generate one.
Do PDF print and copy restrictions really stop people?
Most PDF readers respect them, but they are a request, not a lock: some tools ignore them once the PDF is open. The open password is what keeps the PDF private.
Is there a file size limit?
You can lock files up to 1 GB each. Because everything runs in your browser, very large files need enough free memory, and desktop browsers handle them best.
